SUMMARY

The call for Industry 5 in digital, or, smart, manufacturing emerges from perceived limitations of Industry 4. In Industry 4, humans were considered little more than an adjunct to machines – simply, the ‘human in the loop’. In contrast, Industry 5 seeks to centre the human; conceptualising workers as having the potential to grow, learn, and contribute to, and challenge, new ideas. Industry 5 hence calls for collaboration and co-design between human and machines.

In our workshop, we will facilitate a discussion of how human workers are integrated into the largely engineering-led modelling and development of Industry 5 digital (smart) manufacturing workplace systems.
