National Robotarium

The National Robotarium is a £22.4m purpose-built facility located in Edinburgh at Heriot-Watt University in partnership with The University of Edinburgh.

A synergy of research and engineering, we host unrivalled technology and laboratories for the development and testing of robotics and AI solutions across three distinct areas; Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS), Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) and Precision Laser Applications (PLA).  

Informed by sectoral needs, we work collaboratively with partners around the globe to define challenges and Develop Industry Solutions through the application of Robotics and AI.

Our World-Leading Research is underpinned by ground-breaking science from experts in the field of robotics, data and artificial intelligence.

With a strong focus on entrepreneurship, job creation and buildings digital skills in the workforce we nurture the development of Skills and Talent in robotics and AI. We work with SMEs and other companies to support the adoption of robotic solutions to Accelerate Business, attract investment and benefit society.

Meet the Robots

  • ARI / PAL Robotics

    The ARI / PAL Robotics is a Socially Assistive Robot with the capacity to perform multi-person interactions and social conversations. Its AI, Alana, was created at Heriot-Watt University for the Amazon Alexa competition, and is being developed for use in different social settings, such as welcoming newcomers and entertaining guests.

  • Nao

    Nao is a humanoid robot with touch sensors, microphones, cameras and speech recognition and dialogue in 20 languages, designed to interact and communicate with humans in different environments.

  • Spot

    Named M.A.R.T.I.N and M.A.R.T.I.N.A following a local schools competition, these agile mobile robot dogs can navigate terrain and be used for performing automated routine inspection tasks and data capture in industrial and hazardous environments. As part of the National Robotarium, one of its key applications is improving safety within the construction industry.
