Roundtable Session: Encountering AI Through Art
SUMMARY
There’s a long history of artists developing systems for information exchange, including working with machine learning programmes. Some of the test cases of user experience of AI technology has been in experimental artworks such as chatbots, deep-fakes, GAN-generated image manipulations or generated texts. In this roundtable session you will have a chance to experience some online works by international artists, learn about other works of art which are not those the mainstream media has covered, and discuss with artists whether art is, in fact, one of the best ways to document progress and societal acceptance (or not) of new technologies, systems and tools.
Art and design projects can ask questions of AI developments in novel ways. Visual art, and creative encounters in the form of product/service/industrial design (websites, apps, data visualisations), can demonstrate and play out our current condition as well as speculate on our future condition. This roundtable discussion will open up a wider view on both AI-generated art and also art which enables an encounter with AI, questioning the ethical considerations and societal shifts that increased use of AI will bring.
